AIAI 45th Annual General Assembly and Elections

The Hiawatha First Nation is hosting the 45th Annual General Assembly of the Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians. The Annual Assembly takes place on June 3rd, 4thand 5th, 2014.

The member Nation communities of the Association will gather to lay out the political path of the Association over the next year. Representatives will include elected Chiefs and Councilors as well as technical experts from the First Nations.

One of the major issues to be discussed is the controversial Conservative Government Bill C-33, First Nation Control of First Nation Education Act. At recent meetings of the Confederacy of Nations and the Assembly of First Nations Special Chiefs Assembly, leaders from across Canada rejected the proposed Act.

Another highlight of this year’s assembly is the election of a Grand Chief and Deputy Grand Chief, which will occur on June 3rd at 1pm.

Candidates for the position of Grand Chief include incumbent Gordon Peters of the Delaware Nation and challenger Joel Abram who is currently the elected Chief of the Oneida Nation of the Thames. Vying for the position of Deputy Grand Chief is incumbent Denise Stonefish from the Delaware Nation and Christopher McCormick from the Batchewana First Nation.
